Dreaming of turning your back garden into a Love Island-inspired paradise? You might want to think twice, especially if you’re planning to sell your home any time soon.

From neon signs and bold bars to fire pits and artificial grass, the latest villa-style makeover trends might look glamorous on Instagram – but on leading property expert is warning that they could actually knock thousands off your home’s value.

Terry Fisher, a property expert at We Buy Any Home, says certain flashy outdoor upgrades could devalue your home by as much as £10,000.

“Buyers want a blank canvas,” he said. “When a garden is filled with quirky, high-maintenance features, it can feel cluttered or even impractical. It’s great for a party, but not so appealing for someone thinking long-term.”

While the Love Island villa is known for its glossy garden glow-ups, in real life, decking that dominates a garden, fixed hot tubs, and over-the-top lighting can be red flags for buyers.

Artificial turf and themed setups may grab attention online, but in person they can be off-putting – especially for more traditional buyers.

Instead, Fisher recommends sticking to timeless, low-maintenance style. Think tidy patios, smart lighting, clean fencing and lush greenery that feels calm and inviting.

“If you wouldn’t want to spend your Sunday morning maintaining it, chances are your future buyer won’t either,” he said.

So before you splash out on a poolside-worthy garden bar or another neon sign, consider if that Instagram moment is really worth the potential hit to your home’s value.
