If you’re getting your home ready to sell, it might be time to rethink that giant boucle chair or ultra-low ‘cloud’ sofa. While TikTok and Instagram are full of dreamy interiors, following certain viral furniture trends could actually be making your home harder to shift, a property expert has warned.
According to Terry Fisher of We Buy Any Home, many of today’s social media-inspired interiors are more about looks than liveability – and that’s a red flag for buyers.
“People are drawn to minimalist, ultra-modern furniture that looks great on social media but doesn’t work for the average buyer,” he said. “A huge curved sofa might be eye-catching, but if it dominates the living room and makes the space feel smaller, it puts people off.”

Don’t Let Style Override Substance
The trending pieces flooding our feeds – from bulky boucle armchairs to ultra-low modular sofas – may be visually striking, but they often don’t translate well in real-life homes.
“These low-profile pieces often don’t align well with other furniture, making rooms feel mismatched or poorly laid out,” Fisher explained. “It’s also harder for older viewers to visualise themselves in a space if the furniture looks uncomfortable or hard to use.”
And in smaller properties, oversized statement pieces can be a real turn-off. “Buyers want to be able to imagine their own lives there. If a home is packed with TikTok trends that scream ‘style over substance’, it’s harder for them to picture it,” Fisher added.
Smart Swaps That Work (and Sell)
So how can you strike the right balance between stylish and sellable? According to Fisher, the best approach is to keep it neutral, practical and inviting.
“A comfortable sofa in a classic shape, sensible layout and pieces that don’t overwhelm the room go a long way,” he said. “Buyers want to see a home that feels inviting, spacious and easy to live in.”

His advice? Invest in timeless furniture and layout solutions – and if you love a trend, express it through accessories. “If you love the trending look, go for accessories – like cushions or prints – that you can swap out,” he said. “But when it comes to big-ticket items, stick to styles that won’t date or divide opinion.”
The Budget-Friendly Takeaway
You don’t need to spend a fortune to get your home market-ready. A few smart changes – like rearranging furniture to open up space, swapping oversized items for sleeker shapes, or neutralising bold décor – can make a big difference.
After all, the goal isn’t just to impress on Instagram – it’s to help buyers feel at home.
