Well, it’s not so much an item entirely- it’s actually a fruit. Experts have been raving about a new limescale busting solution, here to kick vinegar out of town- the humble lemon.

If you’ve ever noticed unsightly white spots or dull patches on your taps that refuse to budge no matter how much you scrub, you’re likely dealing with limescale – and no, it won’t come off with just a wipe.

Limescale is caused by the build-up of minerals found in hard water. When this residue dries, it hardens into a crusty deposit that clings to taps and fixtures. Not only does it look grimy, but if left untreated, limescale can also harbour bacteria, meaning your tap could be less hygienic than you think, even after washing your hands.

But before you reach for a bottle of harsh chemical cleaner, there’s a much gentler (and cheaper) solution – and it might already be sitting in your fruit bowl.

According to cleaning pros at Diamond Home Support, all you really need is a lemon. “The acidic properties of lemons make them highly effective at breaking down limescale and restoring the shine to taps,” they explain. “By applying lemon directly to the affected areas and allowing it to work its magic, limescale can be removed without the need for harsh chemical cleaners.”

It may sound too good to be true, but this hack works thanks to the citric acid found in lemon juice. This natural acid is strong enough to dissolve the mineral deposits in limescale, yet still gentle on metal surfaces. Since limescale isn’t water-soluble, simply wiping it won’t work, and you need something acidic to break the chemical bond.

To try it for yourself, slice a lemon in half and rub it directly onto the stained areas of your tap. Let the juice sit for five to ten minutes before wiping away with a damp cloth. You’ll likely notice an immediate difference, and that tell-tale sparkle making a comeback.

This clever trick is a reminder that effective cleaning doesn’t have to mean reaching for specialist products or loading your cupboards with chemicals. Sometimes, the best hacks are the simplest ones, and in this case, they even smell fresh too.
